Keep Your Dog Cool In the Summer

As the weather gets warmer and the sun gets brighter, we look forward to spending more time outside, however, the potential for dehydration, heatstroke, and danger to our dogs increases.

Being prepared for the heat of summer and knowing how to handle symptoms of overheating in your pet is important. Understanding which signs to look for is crucial, especially as some dog breeds are more susceptible to overheating than others due to their physiology. Because of their flattened faces, breeds such as Pugs, Boxers,  Shih Tzus, and Bulldogs have a more difficult time breathing when overexerted. These pets, along with the elderly, overweight, and pets with health problems should be kept cool more often than not.

What is Heatstroke?

Heatstroke occurs when the body becomes unable to control its temperature due to too much time in the heat: the body’s temperature rises rapidly and the body is unable to cool down. Signs of heatstroke include:

Excessive panting

Difficulty breathing

Increased heart and breathing rate

Drooling

Glazed Eyes

Profuse salivation

Vomiting

Deep red or purple tongue

Weakness or lethargy

Lack of balance or collapsing

If your dog shows signs of being overheated, quickly move them into the shade or an air-conditioned area. Applying ice packs or cold towels to their head, neck, and chest or run cool (not cold) water over them will help them cool down fast. Allow them to drink small amounts of cool water or lick ice cubes. Take them directly to a veterinarian if you think they are experiencing heatstroke or show signs of excessive stress due to the heat.

How Do I Keep My Pet Safe Outside?

Any time your pet is outside, it’s paramount to ensure that they have protection from the heat and direct sun, as well as having access to plenty of fresh, cold water. During times of excessive heat, adding ice to water can be helpful. Tarps and shade under trees are great sources of cooling because they don’t obstruct air flow but provide relief from direct sunlight.

When taking dogs out for a walk or to play, be aware of the surfaces they are walking on. On an 86-degree day, the asphalt can reach temperatures as high as 135 degrees! At 125 degrees, the pad of a dog’s paw can get burned in as little as 60 seconds.

A good rule to keep in mind is that when it comes to hot pavement: if it is too hot for your bare feet or the palm of your hand, it is too hot for their paws.

Keep your pet from overheating with a cooling body wrap, vest, or mat. You can find these at local pet stores or online at retailers like If your dog enjoys water, provide a shallow child’s pool for a cool soaking.

Always provide your pet with plenty of fresh water, whether your pets are inside or out. Hydration is one of the most essential needs for pet health. The hotter the temperature outside, the more water they will drink.

Splashing around in small, shallow pools of water or hosing down the driveway and sidewalk can make a big difference and help to ensure your dog doesn’t burn his or her paws. Remember, dogs do not have the ability to sweat, making it much harder for them to cool off their bodies. However, the bottom of your dog’s paws and the spaces between their toes function to keep them cool, meaning keeping their paws cool helps keep them cool!

Dazai is someone characterized by the fact that he does not see the value in living life. He does not find anything in the world to be worth living for. And yet. By saying those words, he implicitly tells Oda that his life was a good one. Not just passable, not just alright, not just tolerable, but good. His life was a good one because Oda is the person that he has to say goodbye to, because saying goodbye to Oda like this is very painful to him. Even though, in this universe, Oda hates him, even though Oda considers him an enemy, even though Oda says he has no right to call him ‘Odasaku’ - Dazai still says his life was a good one, simply because Oda existed in it.

And this list is SO REALLL I couldn't agree more...all characters who focus too long and too hard on work that they absolutely forget to take care of themselves 🙏🙏 Dazai especially I think is very accustomed to passing out lol even just for a few seconds at times, he knows very well he needs to be drinking more water but he just Forgets with everything on his mind lol...he gets that really dizzying feeling just before he blacks out and he's like oh shit whoops

Kunikida worried out of his mind every time Dazai just suddenly drops out on him but the second Dazai's back with him he's holding him by the neck like dammit Dazai drink WATER before i KILL YOU!!!!!

I love this concept for Higuchi too because I think she's better about taking care of herself but she just Forgets. She's halfway through the day and like oh I haven't had anything to drink today that's not good. I'll pick up a water bottle somewhere!! and then just. Forgets lol. She's out in the evening heat waiting on Akutagawa and the rest of the team at the car. She's like oh I forgot I need to drink some water maybe I can stop somewhere on the way home....Akutagawa and Black Lizard show up and she's like oh hey you're all back☺️☺️ and then immediately passes out lol. Akutagawa whipping out Rashomon to catch her before she hits the sidewalk 😭😭 and they're all like immediately concerned that she's been injured or poisoned and Tachihara is like that broad just needs to buy a damn refillable water bottle 🙄🙄

i do wholeheartedly believe gifting animals to elderly patients because they're lonely is the exact same thing as giving a kid an animal because they're bored.

both situations come at great cost to the animal due to neglect, abuse. in the case of the elder they have the very likely chance of being left unattended for a significant time after the person dies and having that trauma. many animals are placed in shelters after their owner dies, and then are euthanized.

Maybe I'm overcooking here but do yall ever think that some dog breeds have different names in fantasy books---Like a newfoundland or a st Bernard. Because newfoundland(a canadian province) doesn't exist in fantasy land; neither does Christianity so no st bernards?? Does that also mean fantasy books shouldn't use the phrase "you're an angel" when someone is super kind because the concept of an angel wouldn't be a thing unless the fantasy world has a religion involving angels. Or are certain cultures so ingrained in us that we forget where a lot of our phrases come from??

we need more dbz characters w chronic pain + disabilities........ i havent seen a lot of headcanons about this......YES this post is brought on because i have had an unrelenting pain in my left shoulder / diaphragm for several days. but i have been thinking baoutthis for a while regardless

i could eprfectly imagine z fighters constantly waving off magical treatment for injuries for the sake of saving senzu for near-death / emergency situations since they take so long to synthesize . like the z fighters are fighters they are not strangers to ghe most common types of sports injuries as well as their own recurring injuries. whayever happened to the swagful compression clothing or ki based mobility aid

or like the saiyans when they get a new transformation always say its super energy-efficient / lossy........ im convinced that the saiyans pushing ghemselves past their limits introduces bone+ muscle damage or quickens degeneration. but they often enough get injuries magically fixed via senzu or dende or w/e post fighting to the death so i dont imagine this is usually a longterm issue

the onyl time i see headcanons about physical disability its like "vegeta gets phantom tail sensations". this is popular because the fans love saiyan tails & want them back, but otherwise have no reason to care about disability HCs outside of this -_-

he'll be crossing the rainbow bridge tomorrow morning. he's gone from a 2 hour walk in the woods yesterday to not even being able to stand up by himself this evening. he had a whole roast chicken for dinner and he gets sausages for breakfast and i will miss him and his waggly tail so much but seeing him tonight reassured me that it's the right call. im absolutely devastated but also comforted by how much joy he brought so many people and how loved he was for his whole life and he will be cuddled right up until he closes his eyes.

Oh this little Mr.!!!! Yesterday he decided to walk two blocks, and today, after we walked around our block he decided to leave our block and go out into the world!!! We did one of our old routes, his favorite, and it took almost an hour. So happy for him that he's feeling better mentally, I have felt so sad for him.
